Located in a valley between the Langeberg and the Outeniqua Mountains in the Karoo is the award-winning 4-star Aquila Private Game Reserve & Spa. The reserve is a 10,000-hectare conservancy and is home to the Big 5 – elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino and leopard - as well as a significant amount of other wild game which roam freely. Aquila’s purpose is to protect and preserve Africa’s increasingly threatened wildlife and is fully committed to social upliftment, job creation, skills development and various sustainable empowerment programmes.
Built with natural stone features, thatch, light and dark wood and decorated in earthy colours, Aquila has a definite African character that blends in with the natural surroundings. The main lodge facilities include a restaurant offering world-class buffet-style meals with an upstairs viewing area that enables guests to enjoy cocktails whilst watching the sun set behind the magnificent Karoo Mountains. There is a smaller outdoor boma restaurant, cigar bar and lounge, swimming pool, swimming pool bar, conference centre, a children's entertainment area, library, and curio shop.
For those seeking rejuvenation of the mind, body and soul, the Tranquila Spa uses natural products that harness the medicinal powers of indigenous plants, flowers and herbs and are free from petrochemicals, synthetic ingredients, colourants and preservative. The Spa features 2 large heated indoor pools, steam room, sauna, nail bar, 10 treatment rooms, a couples or group treatment room and an outdoor pool.
Aquila offers its guests a unique opportunity to experience the reserve’s natural flora and fauna by vehicle, quad bike or on horseback. Guests have the option of tailor making their overnight packages or choosing from 4 different day trip safari packages. For those guests with limited time, Aquila offers a Big 5 safari experience only two hours from Cape Town. Choose from a half day, full day or overnight safari packages.
For guests who opt to overnight at Aquila, there are a variety of luxurious accommodation options catering to families, couples, honeymooners and conference groups. These accommodation options include Standard, Premier and Family Lodge Rooms as well as the Luxury, Family and Premier Cottages.
Situated adjacent to the restaurant is the newly built Aquila Lodge, comprising 3 levels, accessible by a glass panelled lift with magnificent Karoo vistas, with 22 rooms facing the reserve and the mountains and another 22 rooms facing away from the reserve. Modern Afro-chic interior design is used in the lodge.
Aquila's four-star cottages are built largely from rock, thatch and wood to blend with the environment and offer every comfort like roaring log fires, air conditioning, crisp percale linen, rock bathrooms and, in some, alfresco rock showers and in some cases wooden viewing decks.
