Bayala Private Safari Lodges are located within the 10,300-hectare Zuka Private Game Reserve in the heart of Zululand, approximately three hours north of Durban. Established as part of an ambitious rewilding project that began in 2001, the reserve has grown into an important conservation success story, protecting a diverse range of habitats and wildlife in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
The reserve forms part of the 30,000-hectare Munyawana Conservancy, offering exceptional Big 5 game viewing in an unspoilt wilderness. Guests have the opportunity to encounter elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, black and white rhino, cheetah, giraffe, zebra and an abundance of birdlife, along with many other mammals, reptiles and insects.
Bayala welcomes couples, families and groups to two neighbouring lodges – Founders Lodge and Safari Lodge. Each lodge offers 24 comfortable rooms with all the essential amenities for a relaxing stay. Founders Lodge features eight interleading family rooms, while Safari Lodge offers one interleading family room, making both lodges suitable for guests travelling with children.
The lodges combine relaxed comfort with contemporary safari style, offering inviting lounges and bars, indoor and outdoor dining areas, and swimming pools overlooking the surrounding bush. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the shared guest areas, although the emphasis is on disconnecting from everyday technology and reconnecting with nature. Lunch can be arranged on request, while memorable bush breakfasts and bush dinners are available at an additional cost for guests looking to enhance their safari experience.
Daily game drives are led by experienced field guides in open 4x4 safari vehicles. Morning drives depart around sunrise, when the bush comes alive with birdsong and wildlife gathers at waterholes before the heat of the day. Afternoon drives continue into the evening, pausing to enjoy a spectacular African sunset before searching for the reserve's elusive nocturnal animals. Every safari offers a unique experience as your guide and tracker interpret the signs of the bush and seek out some of Africa's most iconic wildlife.
For guests' safety, both lodges are enclosed by a perimeter electric fence, and walking outside the designated lodge areas is not permitted unless accompanied by an authorised guide.
Dining at Bayala Lodge is a relaxed and memorable part of the safari experience, showcasing traditional South African favourites prepared over an open fire, including classic braais and hearty potjie dishes. Guests can enjoy meals in the welcoming lodge dining area or beneath the stars in the atmospheric boma, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Zululand bush.

Bayala's Safari Lodge and Founder's Lodge each offer 24 comfortable, tastefully furnished rooms, accommodating up to 48 guests per lodge. Families are well catered for at Safari Lodge, where interleading rooms provide added convenience.
With an understated design, the rooms offer a peaceful retreat between game drives. Each room includes an en-suite bathroom with a spacious walk-in shower, air conditioning, quality linens, tea and coffee-making facilities, and a hairdryer. Superior Rooms, available only at Founder's Lodge, also feature a private patio with tranquil views over the surrounding bush within the lodge's secure fenced grounds.
