About Madikwe Safari Lodge
Madikwe Safari Lodge offers three luxury lodges, each with its own appeal. The right lodge for you will depend on whether you are travelling with the family, with a group of friends or on your own. Personal preference also plays a big part so to get the most from your stay here, decide if you prefer a smaller and more intimate lodge environment, or a more social atmosphere in the company of other guests from around the world?
The Madikwe Safari Lodge offers simple yet sophisticated accommodation in three exclusive safari camps which compromises of 20 suites in Total
Facilities
Each suite features a sitting area, a bedroom with circular fireplace, a spacious dressing area with personal bar, an en suite bathroom with bath, indoor and outdoor shower and a private plunge pool.
The rooms are organic in design and woven copper screens add intriguing detail.
Overlooking Madikwe’s game-filled plains, intimate sitting areas in all three camps feature shaded outdoor seating on expansive covered decks. There are plentiful fireplaces both inside and outdoors with pizza ovens for fun dining, book-filled libraries and a unique safari shop. A covered outdoor living room offers beanbags and cushions on the floor for casual relaxation. The nearby boma is the setting for evocative starlit dinners.
Game Drives
Game drives are in open safari vehicles and are at sunrise and again in the late afternoon. Keep an eye out for the African wild dog – Madikwe’s signature species. This mammal is one of the continent’s most endangered (largely due to habitat loss), but flourishing in Madikwe.
With no more than eight guests on a game drive, accompanied by their Madikwe field guide, you are assured of an intimate safari experience. Game drives are about 3 hours depending on weather and sightings and include a hot beverage or sundowner stop in a scenic spot where you can appreciate being in the bush and just enjoy the peace and quiet of the moment
Children 6 years and older are welcome on the twice-daily game drives and the children’s game drive (for young guests 3 to 5 years) goes out daily from 10h00 to 12h00 in summer and from 11h00 to 13h00 in winter. Parents are welcome to go along, subject to availability of seats.
Activities
Guests at Madikwe Safari Lodge can view some of Africa's most impressive wildlife on morning and afternoon/evening game-drives. These are conducted in open game-viewing vehicles led by professional and experienced rangers. You can also enjoy excellent bird watching with over 350 bird species found in the area. Book-filled libraries and interpretive centres are also available to keep guests occupied.
Mack & Madi Kids’ Programme
Along with the lodges’ options and flexibility around accommodations and meals, tailor-made activities give children (5 to 11 years) a little extra freedom to explore and just be kids – and make family travel child’s play.
Based at Lelapa Lodge, the Eco House children’s entertainment and education centre keeps young guests occupied with the wonders of the natural world, as well as sporting and creative activities, during their stays.
Just some of the fun includes: family morning game drives; bug CSI; spoor casting; scavenger hunts; pool games; board games; rock painting; cookie baking in the kitchen; toasting marshmallows in the boma; and stargazing. Parents are welcome to join in, or sneak a few hours for themselves.
Bush Walks
These are taken after-breakfast and guests are able to immerse themselves in the bush, rather than just observing it. All five senses are engaged as you feel scrub crunch beneath your feet, touch the velvety acacia seed pod, hear the crack of a branch indicating you are not alone, and spot big game at eye level – exhilarating!
The expert guides will tailor walks to each of the guest’s area/s of interest, focusing on mammals, birds, insects, plants, geology, etc..
The duration is 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on guests’ fitness levels and you need to be over 16 years of age to go on a bush walks. Guests over 60 years must present a medical certificate of good health.
