About Sungulwane Private Game Lodge and Zuka Private Game Reserve
The Munyawana Conservancy is situated in the Zululand region of Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa and encompasses nearly 30 000 hectares of pristine wilderness. The reserve is wedged between two other natural wonderlands, the Mkhuze Game Reserve and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and is a collaboration between private and community landlords that includes Phinda Private Game Reserve, Zuka Private Game Reserve and the Makhasa Community Trust. The conservancy is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, cheetah, buffalo and a huge diversity of birds, smaller mammals, reptiles, and insects.
Zuka Private Game Reserve was founded by Tara and Jessica Getty in 2001, and was born from a vision to return degraded land, ruined by farming practises, to thriving wilderness and to create a blueprint for long-term conservation success.
Today, Zuka supports a vast range of diverse plant and animal species in 10 300 hectares of restored and protected wilderness, and is a model for ecological restoration as well as community upliftment.
The reserve’s close proximity to the Indian Ocean and the Lebombo Mountains, with the region’s ancient sea beds and historic volcanic activity, creates varied geology and rich soils which, in turn, support an incredible assortment of habitats from wide-open plains to forested areas. These factors contribute extensively to the region’s rich animal biodiversity and this, together with its close proximity to the balmy waters and spectacular coral reefs of the Indian Ocean on the East coast, makes for an unrivalled beach and bush holiday.
